A day-long workshop to learn how to create a green roof or roof garden on both new and existing buildings. Rooftop gardens improve air quality and reduce CO2 emissions, delay storm water runoff, increase habitat for birds, reduce the heat island effect, reduce cooling costs and increase the value of buildings. From structural issues to plant selection, costs to permits, this workshop looks at the planning and implementation of green roofs on both residential and larger buildings.

City gardeners and condo dwellers rely on containers to enhance patios, roof terraces and balconies, but container plants need special care. Learn how to choose the right plants, soil mixes, fertilizers and watering methods. Get an in-depth assessment of the most successful plants for both temporary and permanent container planting, and discover how organic gardening practices help deal with pests and diseases. Learn how to evaluate your own garden site and how to create a suitable design.

You don’t have to have an estate to grown a wide variety of fruits in your backyard. You can try dwarf trees or espaliering, grow grapevines over a pergola or plant lowbush blueberries or strawberries in a bed near the house. Even container growing is possible, giving northern gardeners a chance to grow citrus, figs and other frost-tender fruit trees. Marjorie will explain the basics of fruit-growing and more.
